"Nature Detectives in the Internet" focuses on students and teachers, groups of students as well as individuals, groups of nature conservation and the public in general. The project combines Internet with practical field observations of various themes ie. plants &amp; animals and local ecosystems. Colored icons, characterizing each theme, are located interactively on a map by simply clicking in the map. With a set of tools, the user can zoom into the map, get a dynamic visualization „migration” of the observations or can open and read the „reports” with text and foto attached by the participants to each single observation. This allows communication and stimulates the exchange of experiences between participants. The project is regarded as a complementary way of how to introduce and handle "nature" using Internet in environmental education how to raise public awareness and stimulate broad public participation on this important issue. The background of the initiation of the „Nature Detectives in the Internet” concept originates in the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) and its article 13 „to raise ... public awareness and environmental education”. The project is further relevant to practically implement the change of the paradigm "Environmental Education" to "Education for Sustainability" formulated at the UNCED Summit in Rio de Janeiro 1992 and is part of Chapter 36 of the AGENDA 21. It supports ie: species recognition; phenological observations; tracking of observations of animals in relation to environmental/climatic changes according to geographical locations and also offers communication and GISpresentation tools to exchange experiences. More than 20 partner organisations support the project.

In 2003 the city of Rostock will host the International Garden Exhibition, IGA. The exhibition area lies in the north-western part of the city. The potential impacts of the planned rearrangement of the whole IGA area on the vegetation were investigated using geographic information systems (GIS) and Digital Terrain Models (DTM). Because of its vicinity to the Baltic sea and the River Warnow IGA 2003 may be seen as a garden exhibition between land and water. Therefore the restoration of brackish water reed in the marine-terrestrial transition zone is of major importance.

The chemical industry worldwide has released millions of chemical products to date. As EU plants tend to "go east", governments are going to support the establishment of EU law pursuant to national chemical control regulations. This specific scenario can also be applied to many other regions in the world. The large number of chemical products, the numerous international chemical control regulations (Feierl 1998) and the need for international cooperation make the sound management of chemical information a key success factor. This is true for both industry and controlling authorities. This contribution describes the requirements for sound management of chemicals and the recent developments in the IGS (Information and communication system on hazardous substances). IGS is a well established, Internet based and multilingual substance information system relying on close cooperation between a powerful network of data providers.

Dieser Beitrag fasst die Ergebnisse des aktuellen Workshops der GI-Fachgruppe 4.6.2 „Betriebliche Umweltinformationssysteme” (BUIS) zusammen. Im Mittelpunkt standen zwei Themen: Die bisher vemachlässigte strategische Dimension von BUIS und die betriebsübergreifende Perspektive, die bei der Analyse und Optimierung von Produktionsketten, Produktlebenswegen, Verwertungsnetzwerken, Branchen oder Regionen eingenommen wird. Beides stellt Herausforderungen an betriebliche Umweltinformationssysteme, die zu neuen methodischen und technischen Lösungen führen oder Anlass geben, vorhandene Lösungen aus einem neuen Blickwinkel zu betrachten und zu bewerten.
