New developments and decreasing costs of electronic appliances enable the realization of pervasive systems in our daily environment. In our work, we focus on eHome systems. eHomes are homes equipped with electronic devices and a software system offering services incorporating these devices and external services. The configuration of software components making up these systems is one of the major problems preventing their public use. In this paper, we describe the eHome domain related process of specification, configuration and deployment, and the positive impact of tool support on this process. We present our tool suite, the eHomeConfigurator, supporting the configuration and deployment of various services on different home environments.

Two main steps on the way to more realistic simulations of mobile ad-hoc networks are the introduction of realistic mobility and sophisticated radio wave propagation models. Both have strong impact on the performance of mobile ad-hoc networks, e.g. the performance of routing protocols changes with these models. In this paper we introduce a framework which combines realistic mobility and radio wave propagation models. Our approach consists of a mobility generator and an obstacle model for the radio wave propagation. It enables researchers to create realistic simulation setups and thus helps to correctly evaluate new algorithms and protocols. For the mobility generation a wide variety of well understood random mobility models is combined with a graph based zone model, where each zone has its own mobility model. To achieve a realistic radio wave propagation model a ray-tracing approach is used. The integration of these two techniques allows to create simulation setups that closely model reality.

In this paper we consider the problem of reliable communication in wireless routing protocols. Many routing protocols for wireless networks use assumptions that are known to be invalid in this special kind of networks. These shortcomings are not detected in the protocol evaluation because common simulation tools are also based on these assumptions. In this paper we present a more realistic simulation model and a simple way of enabling existing protocols to handle real conditions of wireless propagation. A proof-of-concept implementation is presented and evaluated using simulation and measurements in a real and emulated network.

In this paper1, we propose a simple method to introduce a-priori information in position estimation for mobile ad hoc and sensor networks, in order to improve the estimation accuracy. The a-priori information is derived from the movement of the mobile node with respect to the position of fixed anchor nodes, and it is exploited to perform Bayesian estimation procedure. Numerical simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, which outperforms the maximum likelihood one.
