The interest in the study of trust has grown steadily since 1990 in a wide range of scholarly disciplines. The science of information systems is no exception, since the concepts of information and trust are inseparably intermingled. Meanwhile, there exist numerous applications of trust – most commonly in the areas of security and content filtering - many of which have already successfully been tested in real-world environments. However, with some exceptions, relatively little has been done in laying the conceptual foundations for discussing the relationship between information systems and trust. In this paper we argue that especially in environments, characterized through low presence of institutional mechanisms, availability of information is an important factor in facilitating trusting decisions. Starting from the observations of the confidence building through information in the real world, we identify and classify the potentials of information systems in facilitating trusting decision in virtual environments such as the Internet.

Nowadays, a central topic in database science is the need of an integrated access to large amounts of data provided by various information sources whose contents are strictly related. Often information sources have been designed independently for autonomous applications, so they may present several kinds of heterogeneity. Particularly hard to manage is the semantic heterogeneity, which is due to schema and value inconsistencies. In this paper, we focus our attention mainly on the inconsistency which arises when conflicting instances related to the same concept and possibly coming from different sources are integrated. First, we introduce an operator, called Merge Operator, which allows us to combine data coming from different sources, preserving the information contained in each of them. Then, we present a variant of this operator, the Extended Merge Operator, which associates the integrated data with some information about the process by which they have been obtained. Finally, in order to manage conflicts among integrated data, we briefly present a technique for computing consistent answers over inconsistent databases.

This paper is focused on the performance analysis, comparison and optimization of distributed object middleware for Java 2: RMI (Remote Method Invocation), CORBA IDL (Interface Definition Language) and RMI-IIOP (Remote Method Invocation on Internet Inter-ORB Protocol). The paper presents the following contributions to the research on distributed object performance. First, a detailed performance analysis is provided with the comparison. These results help to understand how the models perform. Second, an overhead analysis has been done, which explains why there are differences in performance. Third, optimizations and improved performance for RMI-IIOP and CORBA IDL are presented. These show considerably better performance in all areas compared to the original versions.
