The Personal Reader1 provides a framework for designing, implementing and maintaining web content readers, which provide personalized enrichment of web content for each individual user. The idea of the the Personal Reader is based on a rigorous approach for applying Semantic Web technologies: A modular framework of components / services - for visualizing the Personal Reader and providing the user interface, for mediating between user requests and available personalization services, and for providing personalized recommendations and access to web content forms the basis for the Personal Reader. In this paper, we describe the architectural outline of the framework as well as some implementation details, and discuss the approach with a reference - a “Personal Reader for Learning Resources”.

In this paper we describe an approach to adaptive navigation assistance that is meant to enhance a user’s information scent. The navigation assistance is composed of a combination of predictive user navigation modeling and common information retrieval methods. Besides assistance in forward browsing, the assistant helps users in deciding when to switch to searching or backtracking, while taking their navigation preferences into account.

The personalized delivery of content is a way of making online content portals more attractive to end users, and consequently, nowadays many online portals provide varying ways of personalizing their service. In order to facilitate the creation of such personalized services, the IMAGEN toolset came into existence. IMAGEN aims at creating personalized con- tent packages, where documents are selected from a repository with respect to the customer’s interests, and are bundled to a pack- age. The appearance of packaged documents may be revised in order to take the layout preferences of authors, service providers, and customers into account. In this contribution, we describe varying ways of personalizing the layout style of content packages, ranging from a plain exchange of styles as suggested by the content authors to a constraint-based style unification. In the sequel we describe how service providers as well as customers may take influence on that revision process in order to obtain personalized layout styles.

In recommender systems the interests of users are typically represented as unordered sets of pages. However, on web sites where the pages are not independent of each other, the order in which the pages are visited is important. A recommender should not only recommend the right pages, but also recommend them in the right order. A widely used form of recommending is the context dependent navigation menu. In this short paper we compare content and usage based methods to build navigation menus from scratch. In our experiments the navigation traces of users clearly showed stages, which indicates that users prefer to view pages in a specific order. Content based methods appear to be adequate for creating menus that group of pages with similar topics, but do not provide an ordering. Usage based methods are necessary to recommend pages that match a user’s current navigation stage.
