The e-Science program was initiated in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s with the aim of bringing together researchers in large scale, collaborative projects involving software and computation to solve grand challenges. A legacy of this program has been an understanding of the importance of the people behind the soft- ware, the researchers and research software engineers, as well as the challenges of developing and maintaining code that is reusable given the problems of software decay.en
