Geoindex Project: Real-time Environmental Visualisation for Geographical Information Systems

We describe the architecture of a prototype system for the real-time visualisation of 3D geographical terrain. The prototype system is an open platform that combines a Virtual Reality system and access to traditional Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This prototype is being carried out within project GEOINDEX partially financed by the EU in its IV Framework Programme.
We present the architecture of the system, with special emphasis on the key functional modules, namely the kernel and the 3D flyer. The kernel assures the performance of the overall system in real time and the flyer offers a virtual output of geographical information coming from a GIS, yet in 3D.
