Zusammenfassung
Management of metainformation is one of the central subjects of environmental information science. However, the widely used definition of metadata as data about data is scientifically no satisfying. The use of common concepts to describe environmental metadata and metainformation would also be advantageous in the actual practical usage and implementation of metadata and metainformation systems. Basis of the herein outlined theory is semiotics, the science of signs.
