Provision of Recreational Areas in Urban Spaces— An International Long-Term Comparison of the Development s of Selected European Cities

Abstract

Open spaces and in particular recreational areas are for many reasons a very important factor for the quality of life of the urban population. Based on GIS data sets for the cities of Bilbao, Bratislava, Lyon, Dresden and Palermo from the EC-projects MURBANDY/ MOLAND 2 analyses were carried out to show the development of the provision of recreational areas and the quality of their reachability within these cities during the past 50 years. The presented paper aims at measuring possible deficits and comparing trends within the analysed cities.

Freiräume und insbesondere Erholungsflächen sind hinsichtlich vieler Gründe sehr wichtig für die Lebensqualität der städtischen Bevölkerung. Basierend auf GIS-Datensätzen für die Städte Bilbao, Bratislava, Lyon, Dresden und Palermo aus den EU-Projekten MURBANDY/MOLAND wurden Analysen, die die Entwicklung der Untersuchungsstädte bezüglich ihrer Ausstattung mit Erholungsflächen und deren Erreichbarkeit innerhalb der vergangenen 50 Jahre aufzeigen, durchgeführt. Der vorliegende Artikel beleuchtet mögliche Defizite und vergleicht die Entwicklungen innerhalb der analysierten Städte.
