Leadership for Software Engineers in Practice: An Industrial Experience Report

Abstract

As software plays an increasingly important role for many companies, the requirements for senior software engineers go beyond developing products and services. If they like it or not, they frequently find themselves becoming key players in organizational transformation processes. Sure enough, these playing fields can be vastly different from what engineering training commonly prepares for. Better get ready! In this presentation, the speaker shares his personal view on the subject of leadership in software engineering projects, based on real-world experiences made in various industrial settings and roles (i.e., founder, researcher, manager). The main goal of this talk is to (re)initiate a fruitful discussion about skills and know-how needed for succeeding in managerial roles in tech. Definitely, these positions are full of opportunities and critical to the success of small and large organizations alike.
