An approach employing case studies for gaining knowledge within software migration projects is presented. First the empirical method case study is defined and later compared to the method of post mortem analysis. We then apply the case study method to the domain of migrating software and discuss the advantages within the context of two industrial case studies conducted with partners. These two case studies are embedded into a larger project investigating knowledge management in software development processes.en
